THE ORGANIZATION
These events are critical fundraisers for the GLASSMEN Drum and Bugle Corps. The 501(c)3 status of the organization allows for us to run bingo weekly, and run Monte Carlo weekends throughout the year. We rely on these fundraisers to help the corps get down the road each summer - but the Monte Carlos are quite time and labor intensive in a short period of time - and we need your help to make them work!
The details of the Monte Carlo weekend are simple - it's just 35 hours of playing poker. A portion of the table pots go to support the corps.
THE PLAYERS
Players come from all around the Toledo community to attend this event. Run at the same time every year, the players usually have our event on their calendars and come ready to play on Friday night! We serve free food to the players, and offer several prizes and sell instant tickets to raise more interest in the event. Years may vary, but we generally have enough players to keep the event going strong through all 35 hours of the weekend event. The important part is having enough volunteers...
THE VOLUNTEERS
Although the players must attend the event to make the fundraising part of it happen, the cycle can't work if we don't have enough VOLUNTEERS! The volunteers staffing the event take care of the food, set-up and clean-up, as well as making up the pool of dealers available. Typically, the membership of the GLASSMEN make up the core of dealers - parents generally do kitchen/clean-up duty and help with other aspects of the event. And don't worry - even if you don't know the first thing about poker - we can teach you - it's simple!
(*NOTE: By law, ALL people staffing/dealing at the event MUST be volunteer, and 18 years of age or older. Those under 18 can still help set-up and tear-down during off-hours.)
The critical volunteer part is to have enough dealers on hand at all times to provide plenty of opportunities for tables to open when enough players are present. Typically, we need more volunteers on Friday nights and Sunday nights, as members/students need more time to travel to the hall to/from school. You can work the whole weekend, or just a few hours.
To sign-up as a volunteer for these events, please call the corps office at 419-698-9775 for more information.
*NOTE: Dress is VERY casual! Come ready to work! (Jeans, Sweatshirt and Sneakers are PERFECT!)
If you are planning on volunteering for the event, PLEASE bring a few dozen cookies or other treats that we can serve from the kitchen throughout the weekend. THANKS!
